AL 6600 series

This series functioned from 1981 to 1983 and seemed to be used for releases Arista did in such burgeoning new genres as new wave and synth pop. It is unclear why the company needed a separate series for titles in those genres, although one thing was for sure: the times were a-changing, and Arista, by hint of a guess, was attempting to keep up with them. Unless otherwise noted, all albums here used the June 1979 label design with the Arista name appearing in the same font as the cascading A’s.

Random Numbers:

AL85/AC85/ARCD85–90126 — Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe — Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe [1989] Jon Anderson was the frontman for this spinoff of the band Yes that he formed in 1988 after becoming dissatisfied with that group having gone commercial with its music. For legal reasons, the group could not call itself Yes, so it just used the last names of its members: lead singer Anderson, drummer Bill Bruford, keyboardist Rick Wakeman and guitarist Steve Howe. The number used for this release was chosen as a numerologically sequential reference to the 1985 Yes album 90125. However, Canadian CDs of this album still used a number in the regular Arista sequence, which was 8590. Of further note is that this album uses a unique font for the “Arista” text that the label never used again. Other Arista-distributed labels

MORNING SKY

Morning Sky was a very short-lived label, only being active in 1976. It was founded by Dan Fogelberg and its only artist was his backing band, Fools Gold, which incidentally yielded its only album. That album was distributed by Arista and appeared on Arista outside of the U.S. The album peaked at #145 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1977, Fogelberg and the group moved to Columbia, where they cut an equally unsuccessful album (Mr. Lucky). In 2000, Fogelberg decided to reactivate Morning Sky as a vehicle for himself.

The Morning Sky label had a brown band with an interior drawing depicting a sailboat merrily going westward as the sun rises. The words MORNING SKY were seen atop the label; the text in the ring was “Manufactured and distributed by Arista Records, Inc., N.Y., N.Y.” At the top of the bottom half of the gold ring was a small black Arista A logo. Promotional copies had the same graphics, but in black and white.

NEIGHBORHOOD

Neighborhood was a label owned by Melanie Safka, which she co-founded with manager-husband Peter Schekeryk after she quit Buddah in 1971. It was distributed by Famous Music, Paramount Pictures’ recording division, until the studio sold it to ABC in 1974, at which point, Safka signed a new deal with Bell. The Neighborhood distribution contract was transferred to Arista upon that label’s formation. The distribution contract Neighborhood had with Arista yielded only one album, and that album was one of Melanie’s. It was released in 1975, and, like a lot of her releases after the single “Brand New Key”, the public greeted it indifferently. After this album, Melanie shut down the Neighborhood label and went on to release several one-off albums with various other record companies. In 1983, Melanie briefly resurrected the Neighborhood label for her album “Seventh Wave”, which was released only in Europe.

The Neighborhood label design was a multi-colored one featuring an enclosure of several buildings. Text on it was black, as was the (barely legible) text, which read “℗&© 1975 Distributed by ARISTA RECORDS, INC., 1776 Broadway, New York, New York 10019”.

I SPY

I Spy was a label run by a mod revival group called Secret Affair. It released only three albums — a matter of fact, those happened to be the only three released by the group during its period of activity (1978–82). It was distributed by Arista’s British arm.

These albums used a black label with a stylized box at the top reading “I-SPY RECORDS” and text at the bottom of the box reading “MARKETED & DISTRIBUTED BY ARISTA RECORDS”. A copyright warning encircled the top half of the label.

STIFF

Stiff Records was a British label founded in 1976. It is known for recording material in the punk rock and new wave categories. Elvis Costello, Madness, Ian Dury, Tracey Ullman, and the Damned were among the artists known to have recorded for it. Island Records attempted to buy a partial stake in the label at the end of 1983; Island, a cash-strapped label then, ordered co-founder Dave Robinson to lend a £1 million payment to fund the share purchase. The deal, in the end, failed, in a manner so costly it led to the label being acquired by ZTT in 1987. It would be revived in 2007. American distribution of the label’s back catalog is currently handled by Razor and Tie via the Concord Music Group.

In 1978, it attempted an American division, which was distributed by Arista. This amounted to only two albums and one single, all of which lived up to the label’s name . . . in that they were stiffs (none of Stiff’s releases under Arista distribution here charted, not even Ian Dury’s album, which at least went to #5 in England). In 1979, the label switched its American distribution home to CBS, which released its material alternatively through either Epic or Columbia. Under any incarnation, American releases on Stiff proved spordiac from there, going up until at least 1983 on the vinyl front.

Most of the notable acts on Stiff ended up having their successful singles on that label issued on others in the U.S. (examples of this are Madness’ “Our House”, the group’s biggest hit here, which was released on Geffen in North America, Tracey Ullman, the comedienne who released her successful material on MCA in the States, and Graham Parker & the Rumour, whose material ended up being released on Arista proper in the U.S.).

The label design for Stiff under its brief American distribution deal with Arista was black with handwritten text reading “STIFF RECORDS”, “Electrically Recorded” and “The world’s most flexible label”, and a text ring reading “Manufactured and distributed by Arista Records, Inc., 6 West 57th St., New York, N.Y. 10019. A Subsidiary of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. All Rights Reserved.”
