By 1989, Arista had become one of the top priority labels of the newly-formed Bertelsmann Music Group. It had been big in almost every major genre, from soft to hard rock, from pop to R&B and from heavy metal to smooth jazz. One bucket of water, however, remained thoroughly uncharted for Arista: country.

It wasn’t that Clive Davis lacked a desire to have Arista tackle it. The Tennessean reported that Davis, when he ran Columbia Records, was a frequent visitor of Nashville, and would come to the annual country music week to greet such personalities as Johnny Cash, Lynn Anderson, Marty Robbins, Ray Price and Tammy Wynette. He had plans to launch a country division as early as 1980, and he had already released some records by Tanya Tucker and Jennifer Warnes that had a clear country identity. But then, a decline set in for the entire record business, and that caused Arista to pause its expansion into Nashville for a decade.

With the health of the industry having substantially improved by the late 1980s, Clive decided to try setting his eyes on the Grand Ole Opry again. On May 8, 1989, he flew his vice president, Tim DuBois, to Nashville, where he announced the launch of a new division of the company devoted entirely to country music. Edward Morris of Billboard reported that DuBois told representatives at a press conference that “we are here to be in the country music business […] we’re not an outpost for rock and pop”. He further noted that Arista intended to have a “long-term commitment to country music”. The Tennessean staff writer Thomas Goldsmith further noted that DuBois said “we are not here to sign a bunch of acts that we think we can cross over; we’re looking at some very, very traditional acts and some that would take a miracle to cross over.” He also quoted Davis as saying that he and DuBois “come with credentials; we don’t come as strangers”.

The first five country acts that Clive Davis signed after the division was formed were Asleep At The Wheel, Lee Roy Parnell, Pam Tillis, Alan Jackson, and Michelle Wright, four of which became major players at Arista’s country arm.

Alan Jackson and his wife Denise were both working people. He was working in the mailroom of the Nashville Network and she was a flight attendant. One day, she asked Glen Campbell, who came in through her airport, for advice on what her husband ought to do. The veteran country singer responded by giving her his manager’s business card and telling her to call. The call worked, and Alan got a job at Arista. He would easily become the label’s biggest country talent of the time, starting with the release of a #3 country hit, “Here In The Real World”, in early 1990. It wasn’t long before he scored a #1 hit; the album DON’T ROCK THE JUKEBOX was, in fact, home to his first four: the title cut, “Someday”, “Dallas” and “I’d Love You All Over Again”. During the ’90s, there was only one moment (when he released the single “A House With No Curtains”) in which Alan Jackson was out of the top 10 on Billboard’s Top Country Songs chart. He made it to the top five 38 times and to the #1 slot 35 times. His biggest pop crossover hit was his duet with Jimmy Buffett, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere”, which made it to #17 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 2003.

Lee Roy Parnell was another major figure of Arista’s country scene in the 1990s. A Texas native, his skills in country and blues scored him at least five top 10 hits on Arista proper, though he never reached the #1 slot on the Top Country Songs chart like Jackson did. Pam Tillis, the eldest daughter of Mel, proved to be a successful country singer in her own respect on Arista, with such hits as “Maybe It Was Memphis”, “Shake The Sugar Tree”, “Spilled Perfume”, “In Between Dances” and “The River and the Highway” ranking among the singles that hit the top 10 with regularity, and her having scored a #1 hit with “Mi Vida Loca” in 1994. Michelle Wright was another do-gooder in Arista’s country chart machine, with at least six #1 country chart hits to her credit (“Take It Like a Man”, “One Time Around”, “Guitar Talk”, “One Good Man”, “Nobody’s Girl”, “Crank My Tractor”). One anamoly among the first five artists on Arista’s dedicated country roster was the Texas band Asleep at the Wheel. It always seemed to travel from label to label in its most active period, and, in 1990, Arista was made one of the band’s stops; it proved not to be a successful stop for the group, with their highest charting single on the label, “Keepin’ Me Up Nights”, petering out at #54.

Still, the success of the other four acts was enough to get other country artists to work with Clive Davis. Steve Wariner was one such artist, honorably discharging himself from MCA to score a series of modest successes at Arista. Rob Crosby (no relation to Bing or David) scored his four biggest hits at the label (“Love Will Bring Her Around”, “She’s a Natural”, “Still Burnin’ For You”, “Working Woman”) although he never reached the top 10. Brooks & Dunn put 51 singles on the Billboard country survey, of which 20, including “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” and a remake of B.W. Stevenson’s “My Maria”, topped the chart. And there were four number one hits — “How Your Love Makes Me Feel” (1997), “One More Day” (2001), “Beautiful Mess” (2002), and “I Believe” (2003) — placed on the country chart for Arista by Diamond Rio. The label also scored some relatively modest successes with the likes of Blackhawk, Linda Davis, Exile, Radney Foster, Dude Mowrey, and the Tractors. In the late 1990s, Arista even made a deal with John Boy & Billy, a regionally syndicated radio comedy duo from Charlotte, North Carolina, to release comedy records and their own, usually NASCAR-centric, compilations across the company’s various Nashville labels.

During the 1990s, Arista would launch several subarms, including Career, a vehicle for singer-songwriters in the country mold, Arista Texas, a vehicle for acts that originated from (and did all their material in) the Lone Star State, Arista Latin, which was Clive Davis’ vehicle for Spanish-language recordings, and Arista Austin, a successor to Arista Texas that specifically specialized in acts originating from the capital city of Texas. These had wildly moderate-at-best degrees of success and they were all folded into Arista Nashville by around 1999.

The late 1990s and 2000s saw the arrivals at Arista Nashville of Brad Paisley, Phil Vassar, and AMERICAN IDOL winner Carrie Underwood, who were its biggest names in the 2000s. Paisley scored at least 20 #1 hits, gave several country legends some much-desired work on a number of his albums, and was attached to the same label for practically all of its remaining life, only jumping to another (EMI Nashville) when Arista Nashville went out of business. Underwood, who you might say is proud to be an “Okie from Muskogee”, to put the title of a Merle Haggard tune, was the first country singer to debut a #1 hit on the Hot 100 with “Inside Your Heaven”, which has also made her the only country singer to have a #1 hit on the pop side on her own in the 2000s. Her other crossover hits included “Jesus, Take the Wheel”. “Something in the Water” and “Before He Cheats”. Vassar was not nearly as successful at crossing over the charting line. He had several top 10 hits to his credit; his biggest, “Just Another Day in Paradise”, was a country chart-topper that made it no higher than #35 on the pop side of the equation.

Although the parent Arista label folded in 2011, Arista Nashville was not affected by its closure. It survived another 12 years in country music before Sony Music decided to pull the plug on it on March 23, 2023. The label’s final album was the self-titled debut of Nate Smith, released on April 28, 2023. He’s now recording for RCA Nashville.

Arista Nashville’s albums were in the regular series from its founding until 2000, when the label became part of the RCA Label Group and releases from it were switched to the RCA consolidated series. The label’s country releases used the standard Arista name until 1996, when the Arista Nashville name began to be used on country records from Arista upon the non-pop end of the Arista line splitting from the pop end in numbering sequence for both albums and singles, with the lower numbers being used for non-pop Arista entries. Albums on Arista Nashville generally fell into any numbering system being used by Arista at any given moment, and, as such, never used consecutive numbering at any point.

There were few vinyl albums issued by Arista’s country division, as that format had been superseded in sales by the CD and cassette by the time it was launched. The few there were used a black label with a background resembling a mountainous landscape at sunset and featuring the Arista name in front of the sunset; the text on the rest of the label appeared in a Eurostile font, as did a text ring that read “Manufactured by Arista Records, Inc., 6 W 57th St., N.Y., N.Y. 10019”.
