On August 1, 1981, a little cable television network that played films and video recordings of the biggest top 40 hits on the small screen blasted off (figuratively speaking) into the living rooms of a select group of New Jersey homes. Soon it expanded nationally, and globally, and changed the way the world looked at and heard music. That little network was MTV, whose success led to similar cable channels devoted to all things country (CMT), R&B and hip-hop (BET) and adult contemporary fare (VH1), and to NBC having its own weekly music video show on Friday nights. Concurrent with the phenomenon of MTV was the home video revolution, which many record companies took advantage of by releasing compilations of their big hit videos on the VHS, Betamax, and Laserdisc formats.

One label that took advantage of the boom in video was Arista Records, who supplied their own hit video clips to MTV, BET, VH1 and the NBC show (Friday Night Videos). It initially licensed compilations of their material to RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video via its MusicVision imprint, but would soon launch its own video arm shortly after becoming part of the newly-formed BMG fold in 1987: 6 West Home Video, named for the address of Arista’s headquarters at 6 W. 57th St. in New York City. The Arista Building was featured in the intro of its earliest titles. Its titles were issued in conjunction with BMG Video, and that company’s logo was sometimes seen at the beginning of the 6 West tapes.

Titles from the label used a 5700 series with an SW prefix — this was, like the name, derived from the address of Arista’s headquarters — which was adapted into the 07822–15700 series in 1991. The label was closed in 1999; some of the last titles in the numbering series were issued on Arista proper, with the most recent (07822–15750–9) being assigned to a Carlos Santana DVD.

Laserdisc issues were handled by Pioneer Artists until 1991, when BMG began to release its own laserdiscs in the US. VHS titles on 6 West/Arista used the -3 suffix, Laserdiscs used the -6 suffix and DVDs used the -9 suffix.

VHS releases of 6 West product used a variety of labels.

PRE-6 WEST ARISTA VIDEO RELEASES

MUSICVISION

MusicVision was a label formed by RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video to handle music titles in the years before most record companies formed their own video divisions. Arista, via RCA Video Productions, released video compilations through this label prior to 6 West’s formation in 1987. The label’s titles appeared on the VHS and Beta formats, using usually the same catalog numbers with only a change in the first digit to indicate the video format (titles on VHS had 6 as the first number, and titles on Beta had 2 as the first number).

TIME LIFE VIDEO

Time Life was the long-running media arm of Time, Inc. (and later Time Warner); originally a publisher of records and books, in 1978, it expanded to home video and feature films. The literary division was closed in January 2001. In 1982, a reorganization of Time-Life’s assets led to a shutting down of Time-Life Films, including Time-Life Video, which would later be resurrected under different management. In the 21st century, Time Life would be sold to multiple private equity firms (most recently Mosaic Media Investment Partners); it went out of business in 2023.

The Kinks used Time Life to issue a home video release of one of their concerts (as aired on HBO) while under contract to Arista. The tape opened with a logo in which a large T and a large L enclose themselves into a red-screened television set, accompanied by melancholic music. The tape ended with the same, then had it freeze to accompany a copyright warning read aloud by the announcer before fading out.

VESTRON VIDEO

In 1981, HBO executive Austin Owen Furst, Jr. formed Vestron Video from the ashes of Time-Life Films. Furst acquired video rights to all titles held by the latter, including the Kinks concert tape. The company, based out of Stamford, Connecticut, was a home video pioneer that later expanded into feature films (which, apart from DIRTY DANCING and, internationally, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, were mostly flops). In 1991, it was sold to LIVE Home Video, and it was closed less than a year later.

MGM/UA HOME VIDEO

MGM/UA Home Video was the video division of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists Entertainment Company. It was originally founded as MGM/CBS Home Video, part of a joint venture with CBS; after the MGM/UA merger, CBS left the firm and started a new joint venture with 20th Century Fox known as CBS/Fox Video. In its early days, in addition to various MGM classics, MGM/UA also released various special interest, children’s, documentary, and music programs, including a television special with Arista artist Barry Manilow.

MV/MB600148 — The First Barry Manilow Special — Barry Manilow [1982] First aired in 1977. Also issued on Laserdisc (MD100148) and CED (MC100148).

LASERDISC COMPANION TITLES

PIONEER ARTISTS

Pioneer Artists was the music video division of the Pioneer Corporation of Japan. It issued laserdiscs of various music video titles, including those produced by Arista via RCA Video Productions. Its relations with Arista continued after Arista formed 6 West Home Video, with Pioneer Artists serving as the company issuing Arista’s video titles on laserdisc. Arista’s relations with Pioneer Artists ended around 1991; BMG used its own video arm for later laserdisc releases handled under 6 West.
