Arista Records Album Discography, Part 21: Bad Boy Records

Bad Boy Records was founded by Sean “Puffy” Combs in 1993 after Andre Harrell fired him from Uptown Records. The label was distributed by Arista via BMG, and, during its time under that label’s belt, proved to be quite a notable label for more than one reason.

Certainly one of the reasons for its notoriety came with the first two albums it issued, the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die [78612–73000–1/2/4] and Craig Mack’s Project Funk da World [78612–73001–1/2/4]. Where Mack’s album went Gold, B.I.G.’s went Platinum. Sextuple Platinum, to be exact. Spawning such hits as “Juicy”, “Big Poppa/Warning” and “One More Chance”, it was widely acclaimed and brought East Coast hip-hop back to the forefront. Its success attracted other talents to Bad Boy, such as Total (a female R&B trio from New Jersey that scored two top-10 pop hits in the 1996–97 timeframe) and the Notorious B.I.G.’s wife, Faith Evans (who issued at leasst three Platinum albums on Bad Boy). It also was home to a stable of in-house producers, such as Easy Mo Bee, Chucky Thompson and D Dot.

However, its success wasn’t the only reason why Bad Boy became a notable label. Another came in the form of what would turn out to be a deadly bloodbath of a war with another label. B.I.G. and Bad Boy proved so successful that it raised tensions with the Interscope-distributed Beverly Hills label, Death Row, one of the labels in the West Coast rap scene that had been previously dominant in mainstream rap (which, ironically, was distributed by BMG in a number of territories outside of the North American continent until 1999). Suge Knight, who headed Death Row, had an especially large ax to grind with the head of Bad Boy, Puff Daddy, who he accused of having been directly involved in the murder of his pal Jake Robles at the hands of Combs’ bodyguard, Anthony “Wolf” Jones. The stakes were raised that much higher when 2Pac, who had accused the Notorious B.I.G. and Puff Daddy of being complicit in shooting him in a Times Square studio lobby in November 1994, was signed to Death Row. The tensions escalated in June 1996, when 2Pac released a single castigating Bad Boy titled “Hit ’Em Up” on Death Row.

On September 7, 1996, 2Pac was shot in Las Vegas. After he died on September 13, Bad Boy issued a note of condolence to him. On March 9, 1997, the Notorious B.I.G. was slain in Los Angeles just before the release of his album Life After Death [78612–73011–1/2/4], which later made it to #1 on the Hot 200, and spawned two #1 hits. The deaths of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur led many to speculate that the rappers went too far in their coastal rivalry. Both the public and judicial sources criticized police investigations into their cases. On July 17, 2023, 61-year-old Wayne Keith Davis was arrested in connection to 2Pac’s murder; he was indicted on one count of open murder with use of a weapon and pleaded not guilty. B.I.G.’s case remains unsolved.

Puff Daddy, meanwhile, decided not to get too heavily involved in the bloodbath, choosing instead to march along with his solo debut, No Way Out [78612–73012–1/2/4] which included the #1 pop-rap-R&B hit “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” and the hastily-released followup, “I’ll Be Missing You”, a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. that topped the charts in 16 countries and was the best-seller of the year in Iceland, the Netherlands and Romania. Puff Daddy also brought in a young protege, Mase, who got a #1 pop-R&B album with the Quadruple Platinum title Harlem World [78612–73017–1/2/4], and a prominent backing group for Bad Boy named L.O.X., who went Platinum with their 1998 debut Money, Power and Respect [78612–73015–1/2/4], only to abruptly leave the label in what would prove to be a seven-year dispute with Puff Daddy over publishing rights to their tunes.

In 1998, Puff Daddy tried to expand its horizons by signing a rock band for the first time. Unfortunately, the band in question, Fuzzbubble, quit the label after recording their first album, which ended up being self-released. That year, he received a $50 million advance from Clive Davis and Arista on future earnings from the Bad Boy label’s recordings.

In 1999, Puff Daddy released his followup album, Forever [78612–73033–1/2/4]. It was a big hit, as was 2000’s Life Story [78612–73026–1/2], but those proved to be flukes. The label went into a decline from 1999 onward, even with multiple name changes to Puff Daddy’s stage name. In 2002, Puff Daddy decided not to renew his distribution contract with Arista, taking his master tapes and roster to, ultimately, the Universal Music Group. In 2005, the label underwent a commercial revival when it got a new distribution deal with the Warner Music Group. This deal lasted until 2015, when Epic Records became the Bad Boy distributor, which it remains to this very day.

This discography covers only the period in which the label was distributed by Arista. The label used a 78612–73000 series throughout its time under the distribution belt of Arista.

Bad Boy label used for 12" records, including vinyl LPs. (Photo credit: Dusty Groove)

The label used by Bad Boy on its vinyl releases during the Arista days was gray and shiny silver with black printing. The silver print was a boy drawn as though he were shouting things, and the black print was a logo for drawn on the cap, and information about the record. Below this was a text ring reading “Bad Boy Entertainment, Inc., 8–10 W. 19th St., 9th Flr., N.Y., N.Y. 10011. Manufactured and Distributed by Arista Records, Inc., a Bertelsmann Music Group Company, 6 West 57th Street, N.Y., N.Y, 10019. Manufactured in U.S.A.” Promotional copies used the same label, but are distinguished by stamped gold text on the back cover of the vinyl versions reading “Lent for Promotional Use Only. Any Sale or Unauthorized Transfer is Prohibited and Void. Subject to Return Upon Request by Owner. Acceptance of This Record Constitutes Agreement to the Above.”

In the early days, the vinyl LP issues on Bad Boy omitted many a track in order to generate enough material for a single 12" record. The CD and cassette issues thus have a different track listing than the LP and track listings for those are marked as “Other Formats”. Starting in 1997, the full track listing started to be used on the vinyl versions, which were split into two to four records.
