Fox Records was formed as a joint venture between Arista Records and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. Although all of its releases came through BMG, distribution of the Fox Records releases tended to alternate between Arista, RCA and Zoo Entertainment.

The label was Fox’s third and final stab at forming a proper record company, following a largely unsuccessful stint from 1958 to 1970 and a more successful one (thanks largely to Barry White) that lasted from 1972 to 1982.

The company’s titles ranged from both contemporary and vintage film scores from Fox to pop rock releases. Almost none of the pop recordings were successful. Of interest, Jamie Foxx released his debut album on Fox (Peep This) while he was still a cast member on In Living Color. D’wayne Wiggins of the group Tony! Toni! Tone! also produced a hip-hop album, Simple E’s Colouz Uv Sound, for Fox.

Fox released the soundtracks of many highly-touted films (and several of the box office hits it scored in the early ’90s) on the Fox label. As well, the label’s “20th Century Fox Film Scores” series provided an opportunity for many of the scores of the studio’s film classics (including the original Fox fanfares) to make their debut on compact disc. Fox also issued a pair of Home Alone compilations during the mid-to-late stages of the Macaulay Culkin era of the franchise.

In 1995, Fox and BMG decided to deactivate Fox Records. From then onward, Fox reorganized its music division as Fox Music and proceeded to strictly use the renamed label to license soundtracks of past and present Fox films and television series to various labels. In 2019, 21st Century Fox, which had been the corporate parent of 20th Century Fox from the time that it was declared separate from News Corporation in 2013, completed the merger of its entertainment assets with the Walt Disney Company. In 2020, the Fox name was dropped from the Fox end of the assets Disney owned due to their being publicly conflated with assets that anti-trust regulations worldwide had forced Disney to spin off into a new company named Fox Corporation. As a result, Fox Music was folded into Hollywood Records, and, as of 2024, it is simply used as a legal name for pre-Disney soundtrack releases from 20th Century Studios.

Fox Records was founded after the CD revolution and had no uniform label of its own on CD. The only commercial vinyl release on the label, which was of the aforementioned Simple E album, contained a white label with the Fox Records logo above, and a text ring reading “℗ & © 1994 Fox Records, Inc., Manufactured and Distributed by Bertelsmann Music Group Company, 1540 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10036. Printed in U.S.A. All rights reserved. Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws.”
