Arista Records Album Discography, Part 23: LaFace Records

LaFace Records was started in 1989 in Atlanta, Georgia through a deal Arista’s head Clive Davis made with singers and aspiring moguls Kenneth Edmonds and Anthony Reid.

They respectively were Babyface and L.A. Reid and both were previously in the Deele, out in Cincinnati, Ohio, and on the SOLAR label. They sang “Body Talk”, “Shoot ’Em Up Movies”, and “Two Occasions”. However, Babyface was also recording other artists on SOLAR, like Midnight Star, for whom he wrote the appropriately named “Slow Jam”. He later was a driving force behind New Jack Swing acts Bobby Brown, Karyn White, Pebbles, Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson and Sheena Easton.

L.A. Reid hadn’t previously produced or written for artists other than himself back in ’89. He and Babyface would grab the attention of both Urban and Top 40 radio formats across the nation (and perhaps the world) with a new form of R&B: Black Pop. The label’s first release was You Said, distinctively Jermaine Jackson’s last regular album for 21 years.

The first act on LaFace who would hit big in this genre was TLC, comprised of Tionne Watkins, Lisa Lopes, and Rozonda Thomas. The group’s name came from the nick names for each member: T stood for “T-Bone”, “L” stood for “Left Eye” and C stood for “Chilli” [sic]. Despite (or maybe because of) their scuffles with themselves, the label, the management, and “The Authoritay” as Cartman would put it on South Park, they were able to score nine top-10s on the Hot 100 during the ’90s. Four of their songs, “Creep”, “Waterfalls”, “No Scrubs”, and “Unpretty”, topped the charts. Their album CrazySexyCool was the only album by a female group to receive the RIAA’s Diamond certification, and they were the first R&B group to get Million certification from the RIAJ (Recording Industry Association of Japan) which was applied to their CD FanMail. In June 2017, the group released its last, self-titled, album; they intend to still tour after that. They are now the highest-selling US-based girl group, with over 65 million records being sold the world over.

Another LaFace Black Pop hit artist was Toni Braxton. Born in Severn, Maryland, she became one of the biggest female acts that decade and one of the great vocalists of her generation, with hits like “You’re Makin’ Me High” and “Un-Break My Heart”, both of which went straight to #1. Her self-titled debut won the Grammy for Best New Artist thanks further to hits like “Another Sad Love Song” and “Breathe Again”. She later invested in TV, with the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars and executive producer credits on WeTV’s reality shows Braxton Family Values and associated spin-off Tamar & Vince. She also has made guest spots on such preschool projects as Blue’s Clues and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.

OutKast provided more chart impetus for LaFace. They recorded Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik which grew popular once its single “Player’s Ball” topped the Hot 100. The group developed their sound further with albums such as ATLiens (1996) and Aquemini (1998) with a variety of styles experimented with at a successful rate. The latter also had a song called “Rosa Parks”. It did not exactly please the woman best known for refusing to sit at the back of a bus in Montgomery (which, of course, led us to the Civil Rights Movement). In 1999, she sued OutKast and the label for misappropriating her name, and for that name also being applied to the tune’s strong obscenities. In particular, she singled out part of the song’s lyrics: “Ah ha, hush that fuss/Everybody move to the back of the bus/Do you want to bump and slump with us/We the type of people make the club get crunk.” U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Hackett dismissed the case in November of that year, so Parks went to Johnnie Cochran, who felt that the song “Rosa Parks” lacked First Amendment protection due to its lack of lyrics focused on her. Hackett having upheld Outkast’s right to use Parks’ name, the civil rights icon took the case to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where some charges were remanded for further trial. Parks would, in the meantime, continue to seek further legal action on the parts of LaFace and BMG in relation to the single. OutKast and their producer and record labels finally reached a settlement in April of 2005. They agreed to pay her an undisclosed cash settlement and to work with the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development in creating programs that would educate folks about the life of Rosa Parks, who died of natural causes just six months later, at age 92.

The next big act on their roster was P!nk. Hailing from Doylestown, Penn., she joined with other members of a “White R&B” group called Choice. But LaFace was more interested in her than anyone else in the group, which disbanded three years after signing. Her first album for the label was Can’t Take Me Home, which spawned the hit songs “There You Go” and “Most Girls” while going 2x Platinum. She would also contribute a single called “Lady Marmalade” from the soundtrack of the remake of Moulin Rouge!, which was also her first chart-topper on the Hot 100. When LaFace closed down, she and the other acts on it went to Arista.

They next went to a man who was born in Dallas, Texas but raised and lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee until moving to Atlanta, Georgia later on in life. His name was Usher. When he was 12 years old, his mother put him in local singing competitions, before catching the attention of a music A&R from the LaFace label. There he hit with a self-titled debut album and then went on to an album called My Way, which spawned the hit title track (which, unlike the Frank Sinatra tune, was NOT from Paul Anka’s pen) and also “Nice & Slow” and “You Make Me Wanna…”.

Next was Goodie Mob and its members included Cee-Lo, Khujo, T-Mo, and Big Gipp. They would record the albums Soul Food and Still Standing for LaFace; their third album World Party was released on Arista proper.

Then finally there was Donell Jones and his songs “U Know What’s Up” and “Where I Wanna Be,” as well as a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off My Feet.”

By the end of the ’90s, LaFace was not producing as many hit acts as it used to (one of its last albums was the soundtrack of Anna and the King, but only owed to Babyface and L.A. Reid having executive producer credits for the score of the Jodie Foster vehicle), and Babyface had a dilemma: one of the “which career would you like to pursue” type. One hand had him trying to become a big star. He was a recording artist for Epic and had some hit albums there. But that was at odds with his duties with a label that Arista was pushing onto the public (Babyface himself only released three albums on Epic; he was that busy at the time). He was also producing as many acts that weren’t on LaFace as were on LaFace. In 1999, he chose to become a big star rather than a big record honcho and sold LaFace to Arista altogether. The label, its master tapes, and most of its roster, folded entirely into Arista in 2000. In 2009, LaFace came back again, under Jive/RCA distribution. Most of its former collective of artists, who had moved on to Arista, would return to the company upon its reactivation. But this new LaFace label was also short lived as it, along with the other labels in the RCA Music Group, folded into RCA Records in 2011.

This discography will center solely on the original Arista era of LaFace. Nearly 100 albums were issued on the LaFace label during its original decade-long existence. It issued few vinyl releases; most of the ones it released used a gritty yellow label with various versions of the logo in orange surrounding it and, at top, the LaFace logo, which, along with the rest of the text, was printed in black. The text at the bottom read “LaFace Records, 1 Capital City Plaza, 3350 Peachtree Rd. N.E., Atlanta, Ga. 30226. Manufactured by Arista Records, Inc., a Bertelsmann Music Group Company.”
