Arista Records Album Discography, Part 5: The 8400 Series
The numbering system from 1986 to 1987 was wildly inconsistent, with the release dates often becoming incongruous with the catalog numbers. Arista also had to reorganize said numbering system. The RCA-esque “AL5/8”, “AC5/8”, and “ALB6” prefixes were shoved out the door. While the ARCD prefix was retained for CDs, vinyl LPs reverted to using the AL prefix and cassettes began to use the “AC” prefix; that T in the middle of the latter was no longer there.
As far as cassettes, Arista made one final change to their older red border artwork, alternating between placing the artist name at the top and the title at the bottom and partially using full artwork derived from their vinyl counterparts. Further, from 1986 all the way through 1991, Arista cassettes were duplicated exclusively on BASF tapes; the easy way to tell if you have an American Arista cassette from 1986 to 1991 that didn’t originate from a record club is to check for a BASF logo; on the spine, the words “BASF CHROME” will appear next to it; the words were stacked atop the text “120 ms EQ” on the shell of the tape.
All this undoubtedly was a result of Arista adjusting to a change in corporate ownership. BMG became the sole owner of Arista in 1986 due to that company having been bought the label’s part-owner RCA Records as a result of General Electric having recently bought the near-moribund RCA Corporation and wanting to divest every single one of its assets (save for NBC). Beginning in 1988, releases began using a byline that read “A Bertelsmann Music Group Company.”
One casualty of the changeover was Arista’s loss of rights to material from Jive. Arista’s new management, in regards to Black music, preferred a strict focus on R&B, and hip-hop fell out of place with that focus, causing Jive to switch distribution to RCA Records from then onward.
Regardless, Arista was still Clive Davis’ joint, and he managed to do a good job of weathering the storm, as many of the 8400 series albums spawned R&B, pop and rock hits.
Albums on this page used a black label with a background resembling a mountainous landscape at sunset and featuring the Arista name in front of the sunset; the text on the rest of the label appeared in a Eurostile font, as did a text ring that read “Manufactured by Arista Records, Inc., 6 W 57th St., N.Y., N.Y. 10019”.
In late 1988 or early 1989, Arista decided to enter the hip-hop game themselves out of regret for having lost the Jive distribution contract; vinyl versions of hip-hop albums on Arista in this series are unique in that they feature a revival of the 1977 black label with slight modifications (“ARISTA” being in the company’s corporate font and the above text ring being in Times New Roman).
Canadian copies of Arista titles from prior to April 1987 used the same label design introduced in 1984, but with two different text rings for each side. Side A read “MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA BY RCA INC. FOR PUBLIC PERFORMANCE UNDER LICENSE ONLY. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.” Side B read “FABRIQUE ET DISTRIBUE AU CANADA PAR RCA INC. POUR EXECUTION PUBLIQUE SOUS LICENSE SEULEMENT. TOUS DROITS RESERVES”. In the April 11, 1987 issue of RPM, it was announced that RCA Inc. would change its name to BMG Music Canada Inc.; releases from April 1987 until the end of vinyl production in Canada have “BMG MUSIC CANADA INC.” in the text ring, replacing “RCA INC.” Arista, as part of BMG, exited vinyl production in Canada in February 1990.
CDs on this page used a silver disc with the Arista logo to the left of the label, a la MCA. On June 26, 1986, Canada finally got its own CD-manufacturing plant when Praxis Technologies, Inc. opened a plant in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga; although Arista’s distributor of that era had its Canadian offices in nearby Scarborough, none of that company’s titles are known to have Praxis-pressed titles. Instead, Arista opted to have its titles pressed at Americ Disc in Drummondville, Quebec. This lasted until 1990, when BMG decided to have its Canadian CDs pressed at Cinram instead. Early Canadian CDs on Arista used the text “Made in Canada by BMG Music” on the label; later ones read “Manufactured and Distributed by BMG Music Canada Inc./Fabriqué et Distribué par Musique BMG du Canada Inc. 2245 Markham Road, Scarborough, Ontario M1B 2W3. All Rights Reserved. Tous Droits Reserves.”
Of note is that according to Michael de Looper, who runs the Australian Record Labels website, in 1989, BMG decided to use numbers in the regular Arista system for Australian releases of that label’s albums; previously BMG used a consolidated VPL1 series for Australian issues of titles from Arista, which RCA brought into its Australian fold in January 1986, shortly after inheriting the distribution contract for that label from Festival, who had inherited it from EMI in early 1980.
