The early Arista albums used a blue label with black print, with the A and either ARISTA or ARISTA RECORDS in white, along with the (optional) text ring. At some pressing plants, the A and Arista were larger and black colored Early albums from Arista were distributed in Canada by Capitol Records (yes, THAT Capitol Records); the text ring on those read “MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA BY CAPITOL RECORDS-EMI OF CANADA LIMITED”. They were distributed by Capitol’s parent company, EMI, in most of the world outside of North America as well; Australian releases on Arista used the same numbering system as the North American releases. Promotional copies had white labels, with the text ring above reading “FOR PROMOTION ONLY — NOT FOR SALE” in the style of promo copies on the predecessor Bell label; there were, however, some that used the standard label with “NOT FOR SALE” stamped at the bottom.

Arista issued eleven albums in quadraphonic sound, an early surround sound process that a number of big labels of the era were using at the time, and which was unsuccessful among the general public, due to the high expense, heavy weight of equipment, and a minimal amount of artists who were releasing material in quadraphonic, as well as general consumer confusion from the fact that there were multiple different quadraphonic processes being used by the different labels. Arista used JVC’s discrete CD4 process for its quadrophonic records; these featured a medium blue label with black print with the A and four outlines thereof and the text “ARISTA QUADRAPHONIC” below. These used an AQ prefix. These albums also used the same graphics as the regular album, but with a color-coordinated border; at the bottom of the front cover was text reading “This Four-Channel Discrete recording is fully compatible. All rear channel information will sound in the front speakers when played in stereo.” The only two artists on Arista to have more than one album issued in quadraphonic were Melissa Manchester and Barry Manilow.

About 1976, Arista started using the copyright warning reading “Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws’’. Its placement on the labels tended to vary between copies of albums, but it was most frequently seen at 9 o’clock on the label.

Until around 1978, albums on Arista were distributed on 8-track and cassette tapes by GRT. The cassettes used the album’s stock number in between the label number “5301” and the letter H, used the standardized dark blue cassette inlay, and had blue shells with black printing. The 8-tracks used “8301” and blue labels printed onto a blue shell. All but one of the quadraphonic Arista albums were also issued on GRT 8-tracks, with a 7301 prefix.

The VERY early Arista albums consisted of reissues from the Bell catalogue.

AB/AT8/ATC 4159 — You Light Up My Life (Original Soundtrack Recording) — Joe Brooks [1977] The vocal version of the title cut is performed by actress Kasey Cisyk, with Didi Conn lip-syncing to it in the film. The 45 RPM issue of her recording credited it to “Original Cast”. Composer-producer Brooks was said by her third husband, recording engineer Ed Rakowicz, to have evaded payment to Cisyk by having had Debby Boone (Pat's daughter) tape over her vocals (right down to duplicating her performance note for note) after Cisyk refused his advances. Boone's recording (released by Warner-Curb) set a record on the Billboard Hot 100 by spending 10 weeks at #1 in 1977, and at the time having spent the longest run at #1 on the chart. Cisyk later sued Brooks for fees earned on her work related to the record and credit on the soundtrack; she received both later on. Please note that some of the tracks listed are from a pinned comment from a YouTube upload of the entire album, and are not listed on the back cover or on the label. At the end of the record, Kermit assumes everyone has been locked out of the Muppet Theater and goes out for dinner with Miss Piggy, but it turns out Kermit has completely forgotten about Fozzie Bear, who shouts HELP enough times to form a locked groove; on this North American version, however, the record simply fades out midway through Fozzie's pleas. [In December 1978, a new label was used featuring a gold gradient at the bottom, and, at the top, a blue background with a series of cascading As. In the center-top, there was a giant A logo with the Arista name, in the Helvetica font, skirting across from the bottom to the top left of the A. The text at the bottom read “Manufactured by Arista Records, Inc., 6 W 57th St., N.Y., N.Y. 10019”. On Canadian copies, the text ring read as “MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA BY CAPITOL RECORDS-EMI OF CANADA, LIMITED.” In mid-1979, “MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO” was added to the text ring; in 1980, the label saw an even longer text ring, which read: “MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA UNDER LICENSE BY CAPITOL RECORDS-EMI OF CANADA, LIMITED—UNAUTHORIZED COPYING OF THIS RECORD IN ANY FORM IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.”]
