Comprehensive Videography of First Independent Films: 20100 series (UK/Ireland)
First Independent’s VA 20100 series was carried over from Vestron, who initiated it in 1990 and used it for UK-exclusive rental releases.
In 1991, incidentally the year after HTV took over Vestron’s UK operations, their tapes began carrying spiels produced by the Video Standards Council in which Simon Bates, then a presenter for BBC Radio 1, explains why the inserted video was awarded its BBFC certificate. These bumpers were also used by Buena Vista, RCA/Columbia, 20/20 Vision and Fox around this time. As with most of the companies tnat used the bumpers, First Independent dropped them after about a year.
In 1992, First Independent introduced a hologram awareness warning from FACT. This was dropped after approximately a year as well. In 1995, First Independent began using a Video Piracy PIF featuring a father who subjects his daughter to a pirated video, which causes the VCR to explode. This was used for about a year, after which it was taken over by a more familiar one, featuring a man taking issue with the pirated video that was sold to him by a rather rude salesman. The latter PIF began being used on First Independent tapes in the fall of 1996 and was used for the rest of the company’s life.
The First Independent label of prior to 1999 was white with black printing with the First Independent logo at the top, the title, running time, BBFC certificate and copyright stamp at the centre, and the copyright warning at the bottom. The warning was in either red or black, depending on the tape.
The very late Columbia TriStar-era releases used a horizontal label with graphics akin to that company.

The remaining releases from the company used Columbia TriStar’s standard tape masters, which had the trailers preceded by the Columbia TriStar logo, a warning scroll, a Hologram Awareness warning, the VSC spiels about the awarded certificate, the “Pirate Videos: Daylight Robbery” PIF, and a DVD trailer in (mostly) that order. As a final nail in First Independent’s coffin, the BBFC website lists these titles, with the exception of “The Base”, as being submitted solely by Columbia TriStar.]
