Comprehensive Videography of USA Home Entertainment Releases
On May 22, 1998, Seagram & Sons, an Irish bottler that had owned Universal Studios for three years, announced that it was acquiring one of the world’s largest companies, PolyGram, from the Dutch multinational giant Philips. However, Seagram, which completed its purchase of the entertainment giant on December 10 of that year, was only interested in the music side of PolyGram and began selling what else it could of the giant empire. Seagram heard offers from companies wishing to buy the studio, which included, among others, a joint venture between Canal+ and Artisan Entertainment. However, Seagram wasn’t satisfied with the idea, and it subsequently looked for individual parts of the library to sell. On October 23, 1998, Seagram arranged to the bulk of the PolyGram library of films released up until March 31, 1996 to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Most of ITC’s output, with the exception of Jim Henson’s projects for that firm, had been acquired by PolyGram in 1995, and that was sold by Seagram to Carlton Television on January 19, 1999. As for October Films and Gramercy Pictures, Seagram announced, on April 8, 1999, that it was selling them and a chunk of PolyGram’s American distribution arm to media mogul Barry Diller and his USA Networks. Diller merged the three to form . . . USA Films. He also formed USA Home Entertainment as a successor to PolyGram Video. He further appointed October Films co-president Scott Greenstein, now the chief content officer of Sirius XM Radio, as head of production of USA Films.
Many of USA’s films were arthouse releases, but the company also attempted, mostly unsuccessfully, to do mainstream fare. Their most successful of the mainstream releases were “Gosford Park”, Robert Altman’s second-to-last feature, the tale of how puppeteer John Cusack went on a journey that saw him “Being John Malkovich”, the Coen brothers’ “The Man Who Wasn’t There”, “Pitch Black”, which began the Riddick franchise and to which USA held the international rights, and, perhaps most influentially, “Traffic”.
Newcomer Steven Soderbergh based his script for “Traffic”, a seminal early 2000s cinematic classic, on a British television show. The film explores the illegal drug trade from a number of perspectives: users of the drugs, enforcers of the drugs, politicians, and drug traffickers. Their stories are edited together throughout the film, although there are some characters who do not meet each other. 20th Century Fox, the original financiers of the film, demanded to Soderbergh that Harrison Ford play a leading role and that he make a lot of changes to the film’s screenplay, something that Soderbergh refused to do. He proposed the script to other major Hollywood studios, but it was rejected because of its almost three-hour running time and the subject matter — “Traffic” is a film more political than most Hollywood productions. USA Films, however, liked the project from the start and Diller offered the filmmakers more money than Fox. Soderbergh also acted as the camera operator, and he placed a distinctive cinematography tint for each story so that audiences could tell them apart. This wound up helping him at the end, as “Traffic”, particularly upon its entry into wide release in January 2001, blew the roof of the movie house, gaining solid reviews from critics and winning four Oscars: Best Director for Steven Soderbergh, Best Supporting Actor for Benicio del Toro, Best Adapted Screenplay for Stephen Gaghan and Best Film Editing for Stephen Mirrione. The picture made $207 million worldwide on a $46 million budget, inspiring a 2004 miniseries.
Other bids for mainstream success on USA’s part didn’t quite pan out in the same direction. They included “Where the Money Is”, a comeback vehicle for Paul Newman that didn’t work out, “One Night at McCool’s”, which few people checked into, “Nurse Betty”, an otherwise acclaimed vehicle for Renee Zellweger, and a sex comedy spoof named “Wet Hot American Summer”, an initially widely-panned sex comedy that took in a very tiny amount of money in its initial run (which wound up being limited to no more than thirty-five cities) but ended up gaining a cult following thanks to the presence of an all-star cast that included Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Meloni, and Molly Shannon; most of these appeared in the film early in their careers.
Most of the arthouse fare on USA Films’ part was acclaimed, but it never got the chance to make that much money, rarely ever making even $1 million. Those that made it past that mark (barely) included the French-Belgian effort “Rosetta”, the British film “Topsy-Turvy”, the Italian period piece “Up at the Villa”, the Chinese film “In the Mood for Love”, and the Indian film “Monsoon Wedding”, which turned out to be its final release. In 2001, Barry Diller decided to focus on the home shopping side of his USA Networks, so on December 17 of that year, he sold all of the company’s non-shopping television and film assets to Vivendi, S.A., who had just acquired Universal Studios. After completing the acquisition on May 8, 2002, Vivendi then folded these assets separately, with USA Films, Good Machine and Universal Focus all being merged to form Focus Features, which would inherit the USA Films function of distributing independent and foreign films in the United States and internationally. Currently, the USA Films library is in the possession of Comcast, who also oversees the post-April 1996 PolyGram library.
In addition to its film output, USA Home Entertainment also handled video rights to products from various sports leagues, and children’s fare such as the Canadian show “Franklin” and the American dub of “Noddy”. The video rights for most all of these are in the hands of other companies today. USA also issued video releases of some of the earliest films of such unconnected firms as First Look Features and Screen Media Films.

The USA Home Entertainment tapes had an ink label which featured the title of the program, a notice for the rights holder, and some text below it which read the following: “Manufactured by USA Home Entertainment, a Division of USA Films, LLC. All Rights Reserved. Unauthorized copying, reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcast prohibited.” At the bottom right would be the catalog number, MPAA rating (if applicable) and the running time, and at the bottom left would be the USA Home Entertainment logo and/or the logo of a company involved in the program’s production.
For all of their titles, USA used a barcode-derived numbering sequence which ended in a 3 suffix for VHS and a 2 suffix for DVD. The company released its titles in both PolyGram’s old 440 000 numbering block (which USA ended up sharing with the Universal Music Group) and in its own 96306–0000 series, which lasted until the end of the company’s brief existence. It would appear that USA was on pretty wobbly footing most of the time, as gaps are apparent in the company’s standard numbering sequence. Alliance Atlantis handled Canadian distribution of all of the USA Home Entertainment titles except for the “Franklin” titles, which were issued by Telegenic (and later by Kaboom) in that country.
Rental releases from USA Home Entertainment usually had a promo for the website videoeta.com (the company never had its own website) and, later, also for the hotline 1–800-VIDEO411.
