DreamWorks Records Story and Album Discography

DreamWorks Records was the record division of the famous motion picture and animation studio (Photo credit: Logopedia).

DreamWorks SKG was founded on October 12, 1994, a joint venture between Steven Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg and David Geffen.

Spielberg was one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers, having made such productions as E.T.: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and, most recently at that time, JURASSIC PARK, and also played a role in the success of many other box office smash hits via his production company, Amblin Entertainment.

Katzenberg was one of the executives, along with Michael Eisner and Frank Price, who revived the ailing Walt Disney Studios in Burbank during the 1980s, most notably via the Touchstone Pictures subsidiary and even more so with the Hollywood Pictures nameplate in the early 1990s. These three men had also risen Disney to dominance in the video market, and had gotten the company to expand by purchasing boutique label Miramax Films in 1993.

Geffen, of course, is a name who is highly well-known to the average music buff, being one of the quintessential men of the record business during the late 20th century, first with such acts as the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt on Asylum, and then with his own label, Geffen, one of the biggest pop labels in the United States, owned since 1990 by MCA Records.

Their efforts were to form a motion picture company that made both live action and animated films, the first such studio founded since the Golden Age of Hollywood. .Through the joint venture, Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen were to make fewer than nine movies annually, be free to work for competing studios of their choice, and be home in time for dinner. They went right to work on the firm, forming a television division, a software division, and buying a stake in the computer animation firm Pacific Data Images.

Given Geffen’s historic status in the music industry, it was inevitable that a record division of the label would be formed as well. DreamWorks Records was thusly founded in 1996. The label hired as executives Mo Ostin and Lenny Waronker, the team that had recently made a highly-publicized walkout of Warner Bros. Records after thirty years of presiding over one of the world’s major labels. When they were hired to run the firm, Ostin quipped, “what you find in the record business is there is more and more a trend toward corporate control, corporate values, and here you’re dealing with a creatively oriented operation.”

George Michael’s album OLDER was the first album ever issued by DreamWorks Records (Photo credit: Discogs).

The label’s first assignment turned out to be the testing ground for the comeback of one of the famous British talents of the 1980s. In 1990, George Michael demanded he be released from his contract with Epic Records due to that label’s failure to promote the album LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE, VOL. 1 [released in America as Columbia C/CK/CT 46898] and what he viewed as the company’s unsupportive attitude toward the charity recordings he did (particularly for the Red Hot AIDS Benefit Series). A request for contractual release from Epic led to a bitter legal battle for George, who ultimately lost his case. He spent the next three years preparing an album for Virgin called OLDER, which found him taking a more serious approach to some new musical territories than he had previously. DreamWorks entered the picture when it acquired the rights, from Virgin and Aegean Records, to distribute the album [DRMC/DRMD-50000] in the North American continent. The record was instantaneously popular in Europe, but American critics were indifferent to it at best. The album debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 then dropped to #9 on the same chart. It did offer a good start to the label by going Platinum, though not multi-Platinum as was George Michael’s norm.

George Michael’s OLDER was also the only album on DreamWorks to feature the logo that would become the one most familiar to filmgoers of the new millenium — that of a boy fishing on the moon on a cloudy night. All the albums that followed contained a logo featuring a few music notes inside a dream cloud. This newer logo would be the final completed project of artist Roy Lichtenstein, one of the leaders of the 1960s American new art movement, who died in New York on September 29, 1997.

The first album by the rock group Eels, BEAUTIFUL FREAK, was the first to contain the more familiar logo of DreamWorks Records (Photo credit: Discogs).

That logo made its first appearance on BEAUTIFUL FREAK [DRMC/DRMD-50001], the debut album of a Los Angeles-based rock group called Eels. The album, a record of lyrical torment set to lush, melancholic pop music, polarized critics, and its singles, “Novocaine for the Soul”, “Susan’s House”, and “Your Lucky Day in Hell” all became modest hits on the charts. The year 1996 would be completed by the original Broadway cast recording of the musical RENT [DRMD2–50003], which became DreamWorks’ first album to span more than one disc; the label issued the London cast recording of another musical, MARTIN GUERRE [DRMD-50004] during that same period.

In 1997, DreamWorks signed comedian Chris Rock for an album called ROLL WITH THE NEW [DRMC/DRMD-50008], which stunned executives at DreamWorks by becoming the label’s first to win a Grammy, which it won for Best Spoken Comedy Album. It also hit #93 on the album charts. Among the other album charters the label had in 1997 were the Rollins Band’s COME IN AND BURN [DRMD-50007, #89] and Morphine’s LIKE SWIMMING [DRMD-50009, #69]. It also would record an electronic supergroup called Dr. Octagon, who met instant critical acclaim through his album DR. OCTAGONECOLOGYST [DRMD-50021]. The group featured vocals from rapper Kool Keith and drumbeats from a man named Dan the Automator. Keith, however, jumped ship before the band started touring, and ended up not returning, causing the group to miss performing at Lollapalooza ’97 and the act to be the first dropped from the label.

That same year, it released an album from a one-man music group called Forest from the Trees. That one man was Carl Stephenson, formerly known in association with the Geto Boys and Beck, who had had a series of mental issues and multiple breakdowns. He began work on an album of his own in 1993. DreamWorks stumbled upon the demos of a record he had completed after a 1996 mental breakdown which left him institutionalized. The album [DRMD-50002], a trip-hop smash that hit #12 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, received instantaneous acclaim and pressured him to work on new material. But, alas, it looks like we may never hear that new material, for he withdrew from the public eye sometime after the album’s success.

Other albums the label issued in 1997 included the soundtracks of the films AMISTAD [DRMD-50035] and THE PEACEMAKER [DRMD-50027], plus MOON HUT [DRMD-50020], a record by a singer from Bloomington, Indiana named Kim Fox, and the British indie rock album CAROUSEL by SUBCIRCUS [DRMD-50026].

Randy Travis was DreamWorks’ first country artist (Photo courtesy: A&E Television Networks).

1998 saw DreamWorks Records start to make a serious genre expansion beyond rock. One natural choice for expansion on the label’s part was country music, given the artist-driven nature of the genre, and the artist-friendly policies that the label was founded upon. During 1998, the label issued two albums in the country genre: YOU AND YOU ALONE [DRMD-50034], which saw Randy Travis following Ostin and Waronker to DreamWorks from Warner Bros., where he became a star; released in the same year was I’M YOURS [DRMD-50100], recorded by a woman named Linda Davis, who came to DreamWorks after several years with Arista’s Nashville subsidiary.

The label’s other charting record (besides that of Randy Travis) was DECSANDRUMSANDROCKANDROLL, recorded by Propellerheads [DRMD-50031]. Other important developments at the label during 1998 included its releases of Rufus Wainwright’s self-titled debut [DRMD-50039], Henry Rollins’ live record THINK TANK [DRMD2–50054], XO [DRMD-50048], the critically acclaimed major-label debut of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and the critically acclaimed follow-up from Eels, ELECTRO-SHOCK BLUES [DRMD-50052]. DreamWorks in 1998 also released the soundtracks of SMALL SOLDIERS, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS, A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY and THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, which had three versions released on the label proper: the main soundtrack recording [DRMD-50041], a gospel recording [DRMD-50050] and a country recording [DRMD-50045].

1999 saw the label releasing the soundtracks of FORCES OF NATURE and AMERICAN BEAUTY, along with Gold records in the debut albums of Buckcherry and Dave Hollister, and a Platinum one in TONIGHT THE STARS REVOLT! [DRMD-50107], recorded by Powerman 5000, whose success gave them the ability to launch their own label, New Noize; after a lawsuit, that label changed its name to El Tonal. DreamWorks also had one of the biggest songs of the year with Buckcherry’s recording of “Lit Up.”

Toby Keith became the most successful recording artist on the DreamWorks label (Photo credit: eBay).

On the country front during 1999, DreamWorks signed a man named Toby Keith. A native of Clinton, Oklahoma, Toby Keith had previously recorded for Mercury, Polydor and A&M, but would achieve stardom on DreamWorks and also would become the most successful artist the label ever recorded. His debut album, HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW?!, went Platinum in late 1999.

Also in 1999, DreamWorks Records switched distributors from Geffen to Interscope; in turn, both Interscope and Geffen had switched international distributors to Polydor as a result of the Universal Music Group’s merger with PolyGram Records, with DreamWorks albums now being distributed by Polydor outside of North America.

DreamWorks Records reached the new millennium in 2000, with another Eels album [DAISIES OF THE GALAXY], soundtracks to ALMOST FAMOUS, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO and ROAD TRIP, and a comedy album from Jeff Foxworthy, plus a Gold record from Dave Hollister [CHICAGO ’85 . . . THE MOVIE].

Nelly Furtado had three international hits spawned by her album WHOA, NELLY! (Photo credit: Getty Images)

2000 was the year of platinum smashes that had nothing to do with country music. Papa Roach infused hip-hop and rap into the rock sound of their record INFEST, which went triple Platinum and became their highest selling record. Nelly Furtado did equally well on the label. The Canadian singer-songwriter’s debut WHOA, NELLY! scored three international hits (“I’m Like a Bird”, “Turn Off the Light”, “…on the Radio (Remember the Days)”) and ended up selling 5–6 million copies worldwide. Then there was Litehouse, who had the most-played song of the year in “Hanging by a Moment.”

There were four Platinum records scored by DreamWorks during 2001. One was the Isley Brothers’ ETERNAL, which hit the top-5 on the album charts, drawing allure from the Mr. Biggs personal now achieved by lead singer Ronald Isley, and also featuring the group’s biggest hit in decades, “Contagious.” Another was ANThology, the first major-label album of Alien Ant Farm, whose revival of the Michael Jackson hit “Smooth Criminal” was enough to make the album sell. The third one was BLEED AMERICAN, from the emo band Jimmy Eat World, which ended up being self-titled after the 9/11 atrocities. Inevitably, that left the fourth Platinum DreamWorks disc of 2001, PULL MY CHAIN, recorded inevitably by Toby Keith.

Among the DreamWorks label’s other 2001 releases were reissues of two 1980s albums from John Fogerty, CENTERFIELD and EYE OF THE ZOMBIE, plus Buckcherry’s TIME BOMB, Powerman 5000’s ANYONE FOR DOOMSDAY?, Pressure 4–5’s BURNING THE PROCESS, Rufus Wainwright’s critically acclaimed disc POSES, and the soundtracks of WWF TOUGH ENOUGH and the namesake movie studio’s most famous motion picture, SHREK.

A rap-rock group named the Apex Theory hit big on DreamWorks Records with their album TOXICITY, but was gone in a flash after their disastrous appearance at OZZFest (Photo credit: Universal Music Group).

In 2002, DreamWorks signed up one of its most surprising artists yet: the Apex Theory, a rap rock group featuring a man with the unusual name Ontronik. The record they released, TOXICITY, was, however, a flop despite the label’s considerable spending money. They were dropped from the label following poor reception at the 2002 OZZFest as the ramblings of Ontronik were said to have confused many of the concert’s patrons.

That year, DreamWorks had only one Platinum record, and, as usual, that record, UNLEASHED, came from the one and only Toby Keith. Which is not to say there weren’t any other DreamWorks albums of note during 2002. DreamWorks finally let the Eels album SOULJACKER out of its shelves after trying to squeeze radio-friendly singles into it (it released the same album internationally the previous year). It also issued an album named THE BATHROOM WALL, recorded by future late night comedian Jimmy Fallon. The label had gold records in LOVEHATETRAGEDY from Papa Roach, I MISS MY FRIEND from country artist Darryl Worley, and the self-titled album of an R&B duo called Floetic. Lifehouse attempted harder rock through STANLEY CLIMBFALL. There was also a multi-faceted compilation album called SWIZZ BEATZ PRESENTS G.H.E.T.T.O. STORIES. And as for soundtracks, DreamWorks had the score of the film MINORITY REPORT and the soundtrack of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN to work with during 2002.

2003 brought the usual Platinum album from Toby Keith [he had SHOCK’N Y’ALL to offer that year], and another Platinum hit in SING THE SORROW from a group called AFI. There was also Eels, with the record SHOOTENANNY!, Alien Ant Farm with TRUANT, Blackstreet with LEVEL II, Boomkat with BOOMKATALOG.1, Rufus Wainwright again with WANT ONE, Dave Hollister with REAL TALK, Darryl Worley’s 9/11-themed compilation HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN? and two CDs involving the Isley Brothers. One was BODY TALK, which topped the album chart upon its release, and another was an album of duets featuring Ronald Isley and Burt Bacharach titled HERE I AM: ISLEY MEETS BACHARACH.

Also released in 2003 was Nelly Furtado’s sophomore album FOLKLORE, a major hit in Europe, particularly in Germany, but a modest success in America. Powerman 5000, whose attempt at an album in 2001 had been shelved by Spider One in an attempt to do something much more creative, released a new record called TRANSFORM in 2003; it was nowhere near the rousing success of their 1999 debut.

On November 11, 2003, Universal Music Group announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire DreamWorks Records from DreamWorks SKG for “about $100 million”, having watched as the label scored over fifty-nine Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certificates from the RIAA and twenty-six Grammy Awards, even though this was a time when major changes were sought by the music business as it struggled to continue to prove itself amidst faltering sales and unofficial music sales surging, thanks mostly to a little program called Napster. Mo Ostin, principal executive, noted that “despite the challenges of the music business today, Universal is acquiring a wonderful asset and the sale will assure the strongest possible future for our artists.”

DreamWorks’ last two soundtracks were SHREK 2 and SHARK TALE (Photo credit: Discogs).

In 2004, Universal placed DreamWorks into the Interscope-Geffen-A&M umbrella. During this time, the time on the label’s clock started to run out. There were no strong album or single hits from anyone during the year. Rufus Wainwright had WANT TWO during 2004; the last two soundtracks on DreamWorks Records, those being SHREK 2 and SHARK TALE, came around that same year.

In 2005, DreamWorks Records released three albums, all of which were in the country genre, including one by Toby Keith, whose CD HONKYTONK UNIVERSITY went Platinum as usual. But that success arrived all too late, as the label closed down in the same year. The pop acts on DreamWorks that weren’t dropped went to Geffen or Interscope, and some of the country acts got shifted across all the labels of UMG Nashville starting on January 29, 2006. Toby Keith formed his own label, Show Dog Nashville, and Scott Borchetta, DreamWorks Records’ country music executive, formed Big Machine Records later in 2005. Mo Ostin achieved a second career as a philanthrophist, donating $10 million to the UCLA for music education in May 2011. Lenny Waronker returned to Warner Bros. Records as a consultant in 2010. Both men live in Los Angeles.

For the longest time, the remaining vessels of the DreamWorks Records roster on Interscope-Geffen-A&M were Nelly Furtado and the All-American Rejects. The All-American Rejects recorded their most recent Interscope album in 2012; they were signed by the Epitaph label in 2019.. Nelly Furtado moved to Universal Latino after her success with the 2006 album LOOSE, went back to Interscope for a 2012 album called THE SPIRIT INDESTRUCTIBLE, then went to Nelstar for her 2017 album THE RIDE.

DreamWorks’ released CDs had no uniform label of their own; the label was founded well past the era of record companies using an all-purpose label design for all of their discs.

Promotional copy of an Eels album (Photo credit: eBay).

Promotional copies generally used a blank disc with the DreamWorks Records logo in full color above the label, a track listing to the left and right, and below all this, the name of the artist, the artist’s album, the album’s stock number, the text “Advance CD. Promotional Copy. Not For Sale.” and below that “©℗SKG Music, LLC.” The words “ADVANCE CD” were stamped in red at the top left. Some promo copies just used the normal artwork but had a white stamp across the top half of the disc reading “PROMOTIONAL.”

Promo copies of DreamWorks CDs typically are found in a jewel case with only an inlay card on the back containing the DreamWorks Records logo, followed by the album artist, title, and stock number, and a blue bar reading “Advance CD. Promotional Copy. Not For Sale. DreamWorks Records, 100 Universal Plaza, Bungalow 477, Universal City, CA 91608. ©℗ SKG Music, L.L.C.” In 1999, the address was changed to “DreamWorks Records, 9268 West Third Street, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.” In 2000, the blue bar changed to read: Advance CD. Promotional Copy. Not For Sale. www.dreamworksrecords.com DreamWorks Records, distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution, Inc. ©℗ SKG Music, L.L.C. Made in U.S.A. All Rights Reserved. DRMC/DRMD 50000 series

This was the original numbering system used by DreamWorks Records. It covered titles dating from during the label’s distribution term with Geffen Records. It used a DRM prefix for the limited amount of vinyl releases it issued, plus a DRMC prefix for cassette and a DRMD prefix for CD. In Europe, this was shortened to DRC for cassette and DRD for CD. In Canada, the DRMSD, and, later, DRSSD prefixes was used for CD. And, finally, Australian CDs on DreamWorks used the DRMDE prefix.

In 1999, DreamWorks switch distributors to Interscope. As with other companies distributed by Universal Music Group, DreamWorks subsequently adopted a barcode numbering system practice inherited from UMG’s merger with PolyGram, which involved a derivation of the twelve-number barcode. In a similar fashion to how PolyGram operated, ten numbers from the middle portion would be used for domestic releases, with international prints cutting out the first three. For CDs the number would end in 2 and for cassettes the number would end in 4. Vinyls issued by DreamWorks (many of them 12" singles) had the number ending in 1.

Shortly after the distribution move to Interscope, DreamWorks titles began using a completely new numbering system that started at 0044–50200. It would last longer than the two other numbering systems the label had used beforehand, running for four years.

0044–50227–2 — Honeyvision — Nicky Love (2001) Australian singer/model. This is may be the trickiest released album to find on the DreamWorks label. Not many copies seem to have been pressed of the released version, nor is that version listed on Discogs as of this writing, although it did get a three-and-a-half-star rating from Rolling Stone magazine when it was issued. Somewhat easier to find, but not by much, is the promo version, numbered DRMF-13538–2. 0044–50230–2 — Like Wow! — Leslie Carter (unreleased) Sister of Nick Carter and Aaron Carter, the former of the two being a member of the Backstreet Boys and the latter being a popular teen star at the time. This was intended to be issued in 2000, but was delayed to April 2001 due to DreamWorks intending to test her fanbase before the album was recorded to ensure its success. However, the label cancelled the release after reports of on-set problems during the making of her first music video. The album was leaked on the Internet (this was the age in which Napster was king) and promo copies occasionally circulate under the number DRMF-13652–2. The title cut is better remembered today for being heard during the closing credits of the computer-animated production Shrek. Carter never recorded another album, and died of a drug overdose on January 31, 2012 at the age of 25. BXXXXXXX-XX series

In North America, around 2003, Universal Music Group overhauled its numbering system significantly. Internationally, releases went through the entire barcode range for the first time, while domestic releases started to use an entirely new consolidated numbering system for both albums and singles which began at B and used a total of nine letters. UMG continues to use this particular numbering system today. The very last releases on the DreamWorks label went with this type of numbering system arrangement. For this portion of the discography, only the albums in this numbering system will be listed.
