In May 1986, MGM fell into the hands of Ted Turner, who was its owner for most of the summer of that year; it was reclaimed by Kirk Kerkorian in August. Subsequently, MGM and UA began being split into separate brands again as part of a new company called MGM/UA Communications Co. During his brief ownership of MGM, Turner sold off its Culver City backlot and Metrocolor laboratories to Lorimar-Telepictures. Lorimar’s Metrocolor labs were sold to Technicolor eventually, while the Culver City lot went to Sony after Warner Bros. acquired Lorimar in 1989.

The late 1980s were marked by a return to form as far as MGM’s fortunes were concerned. MGM released films that were hits with critics or audiences or occasionally both or occasionally neither. All seemed to attract some form of interest.

For 1987, MGM had a definitive hit in Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck, about an Italian American romancing the younger brother of her fiancé. Its star, Cher won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while co-star Olympia Dukakis took the Best Supporting Actress award and the Best Original Screenplay prize went to John Patrick Shanley. The widely-acclaimed hit among critics and audiences was also one of the few comedies to receive a Best Picture nomination.

Other notable films MGM released in 1987 included Overboard, a cult hit about a heiress who cheats a hired carpenter who convinces her that she’s his wife after a bout with amnesia, Robert Altman’s long-shelved O.C. and Stiggs, Fatal Beauty, a Whoopi Goldberg vehicle which Roger Ebert liked even if no one else did (it was dismissed as a ripoff of Beverly Hills Cop), and Spaceballs, a Star Wars spoof from Mel Brooks. A modest hit in the box office, Spaceballs became a cult classic and a hugely influential film in the geek subculture, and one of the best-known motion pictures he ever made; indeed, the Schwartz was with this one. United Artists’ hits for 1987 included Baby Boom and the James Bond adventure The Living Daylights.

1988 in MGM’s portfolio included Willow, a sword-and-sorcery epic which teamed George Lucas and director Ron Howard. It initially seemed to be a moderate success at best, globally making enough to make back its $35 million budget (at $57.3 million domestically) but the money it made domestically was a far cry from Lucas’ Star Wars megahits and wasn’t enough for him to crawl out of the shadow of his Howard the Duck from two years before it. The film proved to be a huge hit in international markets, however, and later became a mega-selling videocassette. However, Lucasfilm, to whom the rights were subsequently reverted, had made a deal with RCA/Columbia for video distribution of Willow, so it is not listed here.

The surprise hit MGM scored in 1988 was with a more minimally budgeted comedy named A Fish Called Wanda. This was an offbeat tale of diamond thieves seeking stolen diamonds with the help of a femme fetale named . . . Wanda. Starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Palin, it was a massive hit, becoming the year’s seventh-highest-grossing film, and was applauded far and wide by many critics. It also made a star out of Kevin Kline, who won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance.

Other MGM films of note in 1988 included Poltergeist III, which ended the original franchise and the life of star Heather O’Rourke (she died during its post-production stage), Masquerade, a romantic mystery written by Dick Wolf a couple of years before his creation of Law & Order, Whoops Apocalypse, an ITC production that some viewed as weird even by British comedy standards, Billy Crystal’s Memories of Me, and the hyper-controversial Catholic drama Last Rites (which made only $427,000). UA’s notable films of 1988 included the political thriller Betrayed, Keenan Ivory Wayans’ breakthrough comedy I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, which was especially popular in the Black community, and Barry Levinson’s warmly applauded portrayal of an autistic savant, Rain Man, which was the final United Artists (and MGM) film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as the last to be nominated for that award until 2021’s Licorice Pizza.

MGM’s biggest 1989 hits came from UA in the form of the James Bond adventure License to Kill and, even more fruitfully, Patrick Swayze in Road House, about a roadside bar owner who rescues a small Missouri town from a corrupt businessman. It made $61 million, an impressive achievement for him after his success in Dirty Dancing, and dtd even better than that on cable, physical media and over-the-top streaming services. Notable films released from MGM in 1989 included Denzel Washington in The Mighty Quinn, the anti-apartheid drama A Dry White Season, and Wicked Stepmother, which was Bette Davis’ final screen appearance.

UA further contributed Little Monsters, which teamed Wonder Years star Fred Savage with Howie Mandel, and Don Bluth’s All Dogs Go to Heaven, a cartoon starring Burt Reynolds as the voice of a heavenly dog befriending an orphan and learning a valuable lesson about friendship. All Dogs Go to Heaven, which also featured the voices of some of the expected assortment of co-stars for Reynolds (Dom DeLuise, Loni Anderson, Charles Nelson Reilly and Vic Tayback), had the misfortune of being the film that theatrically opened against the Disney Studios’ cartoon The Little Mermaid, a massive hit among critics and audiences that instigated the widely-celebrated Disney Renaissance. It performed more impressively on video, and led to an assortment of (mostly) small-screen spinoffs.

As far as the video arm, MGM/UA released many pre-1950 Warner Bros. films for the first time on their own, inheriting the video contracts for them from CBS/Fox Video (Warner themselves retained the video rights to their pre-1950 films for Canada), and issued their first releases of many United Artists classics in their Gold and Silver Top lines. They also began to issue episodes of the classic science-fiction television series The Outer Limits on VHS, and the tapes of them, both for the general market and through the Columbia House Video Club, were successful enough to get the series rebooted in 1995. Other video lines introduced around this time were the MGM Musicals and Cartoon Moviestars collections, the latter of which appeared to replace their earlier Viddy-Oh! For Kids lineup. It also issued a lot of titles from smaller companies, mostly in the UK only, and served as the de facto video arm for Concorde Pictures, a company that B-movie titan Roger Corman founded after selling off New World Pictures. MGM/UA also introduced a UPC code, which ran in a 027616XXXXXX sequence that continued throughout MGM’s distribution of films on their own on video. This was, overall, a pretty good time for MGM/UA, but it wouldn’t last long.

Once again, the numbers are shown with the last few digits only. Since the cataloging had had its number increased to 1000, four are displayed. These were prefaced with a “1” for UK releases, any variation of “20”, “30”, “80” and even “90” for VHS, and a “10” for laserdisc.

Most of the tapes used the same vertical silver label as before, only now with a completely different font than before and with all but the warning and logo being in various shades of red. Additionally, “Entertainment Co.” was replaced with “HOME VIDEO” on the label and the redundant text “AN MGM/UA HOME VIDEO PRESENTATION” was deleted.

One exception as far as label designs were concerned was the 1989 limited edition VHS of The Wizard of Oz, which had a custom label.

Tapes of Gone With the Wind: The 50th Anniversary Edition had a gold label with similar graphics to the regular design.
