As MGM was gaining renewed box office and critical strength again, Kirk Kerkorian tried selling it again, first with a 25% stake going to Barris Industries and then with Australian television company Qintex and then again by Ted Turner. All these deals failed and in March 1990, the studio instead came into the hands of Italian financier Giancarlo Parretti, who had recently acquired the Cannon Group and renamed it to Pathé Communications. The name was chosen out of perverted optimism: Parretti eyed an acquisition of the famed French studio Pathé. However, the deal collapsed immediately because the French government thought he was too shady to buy the company. MGM was his next best purchasing target, and he took it, with help from Time Warner, whose $125 million contribution led to Warner Home Video owning worldwide video rights to MGM and United Artists product, and also with help from the Turner Broadcasting System, whose further $200 million in contributions to the acquisition led to TBS, TNT and other Turner networks broadcasting MGM films domestically. The purchase was completed when a Dutch branch of Crédit Lyonnais joined FinInvest, Sansea and ReteItalia in helping him fund his purchase.

Parretti’s ownership of MGM proved to be one of Hollywood’s biggest blunders. Reports of bounced checks and unpaid actors, creditors, filmmakers and even film laboratories were common. Very few films went into or were in production. Although there were a respectable set of hits in 1990 for MGM, such as Death Warrant and Rocky V, most of the films that Parretti’s MGM released in 1991 proved to be flops, critically and commercially. Given the magnitude of the talent involved, this was a surprise. Not Without My Daughter, starring Alfred Molina and Sally Field, failed to survive controversy over its Islamophobic overtones in America but did well overseas. Life Stinks was Mel Brooks’ first attempt at a straight comedy, and it wasn’t a successful one. Delirious, with John Candy as a soap opera writer, failed to intrigue anyone, even with the note that it wouldn’t be on VHS or laserdisc “for months”. Wolfgang Petersen’s Shattered didn’t exactly shatter the box office despite the presence of Tom Berenger, Bob Hoskins, and Corbin Bernsen in its cast. The Man in the Moon couldn’t make it back down to earth despite Siskel and Ebert having given it two enthusiastic thumbs up. And Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man just about ended Mickey Rourke’s time on the Hollywood A-list.

The only real hit MGM had in 1991, and the most enduring picture it had in that sorry lot, was Ridley Scott’s feminist road movie Thelma & Louise, which followed Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis through the American Southwest. Despite its delays, it brought in $46 million at the domestic box office and became one of the most influential films of the 1990s, influencing many women-themed pictures in the decades to follow. It also shot Brad Pitt to superstardom.

But not even its success was enough to distract MGM from its chaotic bubble . . . or from the erratic behavior of its owner. Parretti cut jobs, lied to the press, sent threatening memos to prominent studio executives, made lavish plans for new headquarters that never came into fruition, brought his 21-year-old daughter Valentina to an important financial post, and even used studio money to buy presents for his girlfriends Carla, Marina and Cinzia. The end credits of films like Thelma & Louise and Company Business even attribute their copyright to simply “Pathe Entertainment, Inc.”, suggesting that his ultimate plan was to phase the MGM name out altogether in favor of Pathe.

Fortunately for MGM and for Hollywood, Parretti did not get his way. In March 1991, Crédit Lyonnais decided it was fed up and asked him to have operating control ceded to studio chief Alan Ladd, Jr. On June 17, 1991, Crédit Lyonnais seized control of the studio, spawning dozens of lawsuits between the bank, Kerkorian and Parretti. Crédit Lyonnais was declared justified in its takeover of MGM by the Delaware Chancery Court on December 30, 1991. Subsequent to this, Parretti faced charges of security fraud in Europe and America, ultimately drawing a four-year prison sentence and a Fr.1 million fine for his crimes in 1999.

Crédit Lyonnais then began to try, in earnest, to resuscitate the company, but to no initial avail. Of eight features released in 1992, only one hit emerged, and then, only modestly: an ice-rink romantic drama called The Cutting Edge, starring Moira Kelly, who later went on to voice Nala in the Lion King movies. The year 1992 also harbored such films as The Vagrant (Bill Paxton attempting comedy in a lead role), the boxing drama Diggstown and an acclaimed contemporary adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.

Their hits of 1993 included Body of Evidence, but only by virtue of Madonna still being a box office draw (the film got stingingly negative reviews upon release), the romantic drama Untamed Heart, and the romantic slapstick comedy Benny & Joon, which made The Proclaimers’ 1988 recording of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” a hit in America. MGM’s other 1993 offerings included The Meteor Man, which became a cult classic for Robert Townsend, Bruce Beresford’s Rich in Love, the secret agent family comedy Undercover Blues, and three films that appeared on the other end of a huge numbering gap that was brought about in 1993: Carl Reiner’s unsuccessful erotic thriller spoof Fatal Instinct, the American rights to the widely-acclaimed Six Degrees of Separation, and Abel Ferrara’s Dangerous Game, which had a pitiful $23,671 take-in despite Madonna’s superstardom.

The most infamous of MGM’s bombs in 1993 was Son of the Pink Panther, an attempt to bring the Pink Panther franchise into the 1990s, without Peter Sellers, but with his character’s bastard son Jacques Gambrelli. It proved to be a bust both critically and financially, ending not only the original franchise, but also the filmmaking career of Blake Edwards, who retired after this film, and the musical career of Henry Mancini, who died a year later. However, Roberto Benigni, the Italian who played Clouseau’s offspring in the picture, went on to achieve legitimate stardom in America, thanks in part to Miramax’s release in the U.S. of his 1998 Holocaust-themed drama Life is Beautiful.

In the early stretches of 1994, MGM offered the not-too-terribly-successful drama Radio Inside, with Elizabeth Shue and a then-contemporary alt-rock soundtrack, Clean Slate, a vehicle for Dana Carvey that didn’t make a clean sweep at the box office, Getting Even with Dad, an inevitable Home Alone imitation featuring that film’s star, Macaulay Culkin, in his last before he hit puberty, and a film that, with $10.5 million at the domestic box office, gave MGM its biggest opening weekend hit in quite some time: Blown Away, starring Tommy Lee Jones as a recently freed Irish bomber pursued by a Boston bomb squad that he is targeting; Jeff Bridges plays the leader of that squad. Although it ultimately suffered from instantaneous comparisons with the similar and somewhat more innovative Speed, and although many an Irishman faulted the accents of those playing IRA members in the picture, it was still a big one for MGM.

Rounding out the films assigned to catalog numbers before 5100, MGM attempted a summertime sequel to A Christmas Story, titled It Runs in the Family. It opened…in the fall…to an ultra-weak $71,000 gross against a $15 million budget. Not even a change of title for video release (to My Summer Story) could make people want to sit through it, and it became nowhere near as well known as the original, which remains a perennial holiday favorite.

On the non-theatrical front, MGM began tossing its hat fully in the box set ring around this time and found another popular 1960s TV show to put out on VHS once it exhausted its first sampling of original Outer Limits episodes: a spy classic titled The Man from U.N.C.L.E., starring David McCallum as an employee of a counterespionage and law-enforcement agency known simply as U.N.C.L.E.. The program, which MGM produced itself, originally ran on NBC from 1964 to 1968. Roughly 44 of the show’s 105 episodes made it to commercial VHS tapes via MGM/UA, and practically all of them feature a major celebrity of either the video era, or of the program’s era, or of both eras, much to the eventual lament of a website created by a fan of the program.

MGM/UA also kept fans of the company’s world-famous James Bond franchise busy during the period in which it was out of production, putting out reissues of the most famous of his films (which had been taken out of CBS/Fox’s hands upon the termination of that company’s deal with MGM/UA) on VHS and Laserdisc as well as issuing VHS tapes of episodes of a short-lived syndicated cartoon spinoff of the 007 adventures titled James Bond Jr. And for movie buffs in general, MGM/UA (like many studios) started to get more into releasing pre-video era films during the early ’90s as almost all the world had a VCR (usually of the VHS variety) by at least 1990, and in many cases MGM/UA’s dive into that early era stretched as far back as the 1920s and 1930s. While all of them were released separately on video, there were a few that got lumped together for Double Feature laserdiscs. There was a line MGM/UA introduced in 1991 called Forbidden Hollywood, which looked at the spicier films of the era before the 1934 implementation of the Hays Code, and which was hosted by Leonard Maltin. In 1993, MGM/UA began releasing a sampling of the post-Fox Charlie Chan films on video as part of the pre-1946 Monogram library, which was not included in Ted Turner’s 1986 acquisition, and short-lived ownership, of MGM/UA.

Titles from this series used various prefixes before the last four digits. Internationally, releases started to use a “5XXXX” series upon the move to Warner for video distribution.

This end of the sequence will go from 2000 to 5000 due to there being large gaps in the numbering sequence between those numbers. There was one gap that appears to have been placed in the late fall of 1993, another in the spring of 1994, and then a third hole punch in the sequence between late 1994 and early 1995.

Almost all the titles on this page had a vertical silver label, which now had all the text printed in black, and which had gained a white center where all the text relevant to the tape ws placed. Also, the warning text at the bottom changed. It was now the same as that used by Warner Home Video, and tapes issued or pressed before 1993 had just a plainly presented FBI warning.

Tapes issued afterward had a more cumbersome FBI warning on the label, much like Warner’s own tapes from after 1993.

Canadian copies had English and French INTERPOL warnings on the label instead.

2243: Delirious (1991) John Candy stars as a soap opera writer who ends up getting trapped in his own show in a film its poster intoned viewers to see immediately because “it won’t be on cassette for months.” The months it took to get on cassette ended up being very few; it appeared on the VHS and Laserdisc formats in North America in December 1991, little over four after it had been out in the theater. The US VHS had trailers at the end of the tape for Rush, Thelma & Louise and Life Stinks. The UK VHS had trailers for Batman Returns, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, The Cutting Edge, Crisscross and The Mambo Kings.

2257: Not Without My Daughter (1991) Original U.S. VHS had no previews. Original U.K. VHS opened with previews for Thelma & Louise, The Flash II: Revenge of the Trickster, Nothing But Trouble, and To My Daughter. This movie, starring Sally Field in the true story of Betty Mahmoody, an American citizen who fled her abusive Iranian husband with her daughter in tow, was one of the most controversial of its era, as its paint of the Muslim faith in a negative light, coupled with its being released at the height of the Gulf War, pained many in the Muslim faith and even those well outside of it, such as Roger Ebert, who nonetheless gave it a thumbs up. The Los Angeles Times reported that some Muslim Americans, namely Yousef Salem, the public relations director of the United Muslims of America, felt that it would make people more prejudiced against people of Middle Eastern heritage than they ever were before. Original U.K. rental VHS opened with previews for Thelma & Louise, Nothing but Trouble, To My Daughter and The Flash II: Revenge of the Trickster.

2314: Life Stinks (1991) Mel Brooks’ ill-fated attempt to make a comedy that didn’t parody anything or break the fourth wall. Instead, this is a social commentary about the tough going that a rich businessman faces when he bets a corporate rival that he could pass for a homeless and penniless person on the streets of Los Angeles. Audiences did not take too kindly to this newer, more straight-laced version of Mel Brooks, and he went back to the parody confines with Robin Hood: Men in Tights two years later. MGM had the rights to issue the video in North America only; internationally, it was released on FoxVideo.

2612: The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) Boris Karloff dressed up in yellow-face for this troubled production, which was a hit at the time but which, by 1972, was asked to be pulled from circulation by the Japanese American Citizens League due to it having negative stereotypes of Asians in it.

2613: Bureau of Missing Persons (1933) Pre-1950 Warner Bros. film.

2614: The Cabin in the Cotton (1932) Pre-1950 Warner Bros. film. Bette Davis, using a Southern accent, at one point utters the line, “I’d like to kiss you, but I just washed my hair,” a quotation lifted straight from its source material (written by Harry Harrison Kroll) that was later quoted in the 1995 crime caper Get Shorty.

2615: Ex-Lady (1933) Pre-1950 Warner Bros. film. Star Bette Davis eventually disowned this picture for appearing to glamorize her despite the fact that she “wasn’t the type to be glamorized”, and for its marketing, which “falsely pictured her as half-naked”; she, however, found another 1933 film she was in, Parachute Jumper, to be more disgusting.

2813: Untamed Heart (1993) The first VHS and Laserdisc releases of this film marked the debut of a new logo for MGM/UA that carried the company into early 1998. In the opening variation, a gold 3D CGI filmstrip swerves to the middle of the screen, with the camera then taking on rollercoaster-type movements as it pans upwards and shows multiple frames of the 1928 MGM logo (with Jackie, who roars once). The strip then gains a set of blue light rays and pans down, revealing the MGM logo of the era, redone in a CGI mask with Leo in the strip. The MGM markers then dim out, with Leo and the drama mask turning gold, then the “MGM/UA” text rotating toward the center, then the “HOME VIDEO” text fading in below a dark blue line. The closing variation has the completed logo (sans text) flying in with the text animating in its typical position. Leo does not turn gold in this variant. Original U.S. rental tapes had previews for That’s Entertainment III, Undercover Blues, Rich in Love and Benny & Joon. Original U.K. rental tapes had previews for Body Snatchers, Benny & Joon, Made in America, Dennis, a slide promoting The Assassin and an advert for British Telecom.
