MGM/UA Home Video-graphy, 5

On March 25, 1997, a new format made its way out of Japan and began the process of shaking up the home entertainment environment in more ways than one. The new format was DVD. MGM/UA was one of the first companies to jump onboard the DVD bandwagon, releasing, in its first two years, a batch of the expected vintage and then-contemporary material from the MGM and UA libraries. MGM didn’t have much of anything else to offer on DVD yet. Like its brethren in the Warner distribution staple, its titles in the early days came in snapper cases; MGM’s had a tiny proof of purchase stub in the middle. But the MGM discs were not to stay in snapper cases for long, and actual MGM/UA DVDs in that packaging are quite a bit hard to come by today. When you do find one such disc, expect it to be of the rare instances where MGM got to issue one of its pre-1986 films on the format before Warner Bros. snatched video rights to that library away from the studio in 1999. Like most companies that issued DVDs in their infancy, MGM put either a trailer or a commentary on their earliest discs (and rarely put more than one bonus feature on their discs); most of the post-snapper case releases also came with a “collectible” booklet, which had a minimum of four pages.

As far as the movie releases MGM/UA did in 1997 were concerned, the bag was mixed. Really mixed. Touch, with Tom Arnold in a rare dramatic role, made only $387,069 in the theaters. MGM did not do much better with the martial arts fantasy Warriors of Virtue, as it died just as quickly at the box office, though it was a hit on video. Hoodlum, a fictionalized account of the Italian-Jewish mafia’s feud with Black Harlem gangsters in the late 1920s and early 1930s, didn’t exactly make a killing with critics or with audiences. Wim Wenders’ The End of Violence didn’t become one of his most acclaimed. Richard Gere made a film for MGM called Red Corner, about an American businessman wrongfully put on trial for murder in China. The movie regarded China’s judicial system in such an unflattering matter that the Chinese government censored the film and had officials fly directly to MGM’s offices to demand an explanation as to why the company released it during then-Chinese president Jiang Zemin’s visit to Washington. Gere, for his part, has stated that his condemnation of the Chinese government, through this and other activities (namely his activism regarding Tibet and kinship with the Dalai Lama) had a significant impact on his film career.

Of course, all this would be overshadowed by the second 1990s screen return of Bond…James Bond. Secret Agent 007 — whose GoldenEye became among the first films ever released on DVD in the US in the same year — tried to stop a Rupert Murdoch type from engineering world events designed to usher in World War III in a film called Tomorrow Never Dies, his eighteenth adventure. This features a special dedication to Albert R. Broccoli, longtime presenter of the Bond films, who died during this picture’s production. It made $333 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 1997, as well as the only time Pierce Brosnan ever starred in a James Bond movie that did not top the domestic box office chart on its opening weekend; instead, the famed British spy took a second-place position behind James Cameron’s highly-promoted epic Titanic, which opened in the U.S. and Canada on the same day.

MGM had a fairly productive 1997 businesswise in fronts other than its involvement in the launch of DVD. On April 11, 1997, it bought all of Metromedia’s film divisions, including the Samuel Goldwyn Company and Orion Pictures, for $573 million; the deal closed in July. MGM soon squeezed out the first of the last gasps of air from Orion, which included The Locusts, which left test audiences aghast at the sight of a graphic bull castration on film, and was unable to recover from having done so, the crime drama Gang Related, which Tupac Shakur was in the middle of filming at the time of his now-solved murder, and which flopped upon its initial release, and the romantic comedy Best Men, which made only $5,000 at the box office.

MGM also sued Sony Pictures in November over its intent to launch a competing 007 franchise courtesy of Thunderball director Kevin McClory; in the lawsuit, MGM alleged that former UA executive John Calley, who had gone off to Sony, had given that company confidential information in their attempt to make a new James Bond film. The case was settled out of court in the middle of 1998, when MGM traded the rights to make a Spider-Man movie to Sony, and, in exchange, got the filming rights to Casino Royale. Separately, MGM bought the rights to a non-Eon Bond film, Never Say Never Again, from the estate of producer Jack Schwartzman, making Sean Connery’s comeback as Bond an officially-owned-and-licensed 007 entry for the first time.

Late in the year, it renamed its website URL from mgmua.com to www.mgm.com. The website promo was updated to reflect this.

On the video front, MGM/UA apparently aimed to compete in a sing-along kidvid market dominated by Disney and Kidsongs since 1986, doing so with the MGM Sing-Alongs series, which it issued on March 4, 1997 for US$12.98 a tape. However, it could not compete with Disney’s Sing-Along lineup, and MGM gave up on it after four tapes. More fruitfully, MGM/UA commemorated the 20th anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley by reissuing several of his films and specially-compiled video works in a lineup called the Elvis Commemorative Collection. Some of the films in it were among the first MGM issued on DVD.

In early 1998, MGM permanently retired the use of “UA” on their home video products, renaming itself to MGM Home Entertainment, a name it used from then on. The new company would absorb Orion Home Video and its various contracts, which eventually included the pre-1996 PolyGram film library. The movies MGM offered early that year theatrically were a pair of independent films: Deceiver, from the Pate brothers (Jonas and Josh), and the three-time Sundance Film Festival award winner Hurricane Streets (through United Artists.

Titles from this series used various prefixes before the last four digits, including a constant “90” prefix for DVD releases. Internationally, releases used a Warner Bros.-customized “5XXXX” series. MGM/UA also issued titles from MGM Interactive in this numbering sequence, like in the 5100 series.

U.S. tapes used the 1993 revision of the 1990 label design; the name change to MGM Home Entertainment in 1998 merited that the logo at the top was rhe regular MGM print logo and that HOME ENTERTAINMENT replaced home video. There was a change in the FBI font on the label around this time, too.

Around late 1998, MGM adopted a new white ink label with graphics similar to those used on tapes from Orion Home Video, which it had recently bought out at the time.
