MGM/UA Home Video-graphy, 6
The 1998–2000 timeframe marked the end of the road for MGM’s days as a company distributed by Warner Home Video. In the preceding 6000–7000 block of catalog numbers, MGM had evidently become perturbed by the impeding loss of access to its own pre-1986 library and the pre-1950 Warner Bros. films due to both of them having been bought by Warner when it acquired Ted Turner’s assets (it was no coincidence that this page contains MGM’s last releases of some of them). MGM then sped up the time it took to get them off of Warner’s distribution belt, buying up the Orion, Epic Productions, pre-1994 Castle Rock and pre-1996 PolyGram libraries, as well as gaining the North American rights to the archives of Nelson Entertainment, including the Embassy Pictures and De Laurentiis Entertainment Group lineup of films, and apparently subscribing to the edict that “anything Warner was doing, do the opposite.”
In 1998, Circuit City attempted to launch a rental version of the DVD format called DIVX, a higher-encrypted disc that the owner could pay $4.50 to watch for two days from its initial viewing, with an option to pay another fee to keep watching the disc for two more days, or pay another fee to convert the disc into “DIVX Silver”, which could make the viewer watch it for as many times he or she or they saw it possible. Oh, yes, and your use of this format was managed by a phone line, which meant that you had to have a DIVX account in order to play any DIVX title on your DIVX-enhanced DVD player, which would call a server over the line to charge you with additional fees, in a manner that made it seem more like pay-per-view. As one could imagine, none of the prospects of this went over well with those in the know about emerging video technology, with the new format being denounced by the Internet at large, as well as by film critic Roger Ebert, by the DVD Forum, by the creators of the DVD format (Sony and Toshiba), by Hollywood Video (a rental chain that responded to this by becoming the first in the world to physically rent out actual DVDs) and, indeed, by a major pusher of the DVD format, Warner Home Video.
MGM’s response? Well, in another attempt to get out of its Warner distribution deal, MGM hopped aboard the DIVX gravy train almost immediately after Warner rejected it. Roughly fifteen titles from its lineup — many carried over from regular DVDs — were issued on this attempted format, which backfired spectacularly. The DIVX format hit a sales peak around the 1998 holiday season and then dropped off like a comet, as consumers decided they’d rather not pay to keep a non-returnable movie around for longer than two days. Circuit City caught on to this quickly, as DIVX was discontinued on June 16, 1999, and its DRM servers were shut down for good on July 7, 2001. After June 16, 1999, MGM and the other studios involved in the DIVX project (Fox, Paramount, Disney, Universal, DreamWorks) went back to just issuing DVDs as nature seems to have intended them — discs you didn’t have to ever pay a penny to watch for longer than two days (or even at all).
On the theatrical front, MGM gave Leonardo DiCaprio his first film since making his turn as a hunk the ladies wooed over in the Oscar-winning Best Picture Titanic. He fronted the all-star cast of a film called The Man in the Iron Mask, where he, unusually, played both the good and the bad guy in a reimagining of novels by Alexandre Dumas. So what if the results got mixed reviews? There was enough DiCaprio Fever going around then to ensure that the film was a hit all around, as the $35 million film made $183 million everywhere it went.
A few months later, on United Artists again, MGM put out the last hurrah for John Frankenheimer in the Department of Good Reviews: Ronin, starring Robert DeNiro as a man fronting a team of former special operatives trying to steal a mysterious, heavily-guarded briefcase while navigating a maze of shifting loyalties. The film’s car chases through Nice and Paris received enormous welcome from critics and audiences reacted mostly well to the whole thing, giving it a nice $70.7 million on a $55 million budget. However, this was not the last we were to hear from John Frankenheimer, as, in 2000, he finished his film career at Dimension with the poorly-received Reindeer Games. Frankenheimer died on July 6, 2002.
Other movies MGM trudged through in 1998 were Species II, a movie that did not make the killing the original did at the box office, Disturbing Behavior, a kind of High School Stepford Wives from X-Files producer-director David Nutter that was heavily cut by the studio before it could be shown in a theater, and appeared to suffer for that at the box office (though there are fans demanding a director’s cut restoring cut scenes), Dirty Work, a vehicle for Saturday Night Live star Norm Macdonald which also happened to be the only widely-released theatrical film out of the six made by Bob Saget, and the Orion holdover Storefront Hitchcock, which got shown in New York for one week only.
MGM started off 1999 with At First Sight, a movie based on the true story of Shirl Jennings (1940–2003), a Virginian who, at the request of his girlfriend, reclaims his sight. Val Kilmer played the character based on Mr. Jennings in this picture, which was one of the last five that Siskel and Ebert ever reviewed together before a brain tumor tragically ended the life and career of critic Gene Siskel. He liked it; Roger Ebert did not. And audiences at the time appeared to be indifferent to it, as the film bombed, only grossing $22.4 million on a $60 million budget.
There weren’t many people who went to see another highly-promoted early 1999 entry from MGM: an adaptation of the 1960s spy TV classic The Mod Squad, with Claire Danes, Omar Epps and Giovanni Ribisi. The movie, this time around, was completely trashed by the critics, and also ignored by the public, grossing $15.4 million on a $21 million budget. In the same month that it released that picture, MGM put out a sequel to the 1976 horror classic Carrie: The Rage: Carrie 2. Critics felt it was just the original all over again, just with a different star (Emily Bergi in place of Sissy Spacek) and it too bombed. However, retrospective reviews on the Fangoria and Bloody Disgusting websites have hailed it as an unintentionally timely castigation of toxic masculinity that they felt suited the #MeToo era perfectly.
MGM, in 1999, felt that a modern remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the age-old story of a billionaire art gallery thief falling in love with an insurance investigator, suited the summer perfectly. Pierce Brosnan took Steve McQueen’s old role, and Rene Russo stepped into Faye Dunaway’s, combining their talents for a reasonably well-regarded $48 million remake (as far as those are concerned) that did pretty well at the box office, at $124.3 million.
On September 28, 1999, MGM had another hit . . . just not a very well-received one. The $29 million Stigmata, which Roger Ebert described as “possibly the funniest movie ever made about Catholicism — from a theological point of view”, tells of a Pittsburgh hairdresser who acquires the titular set of body wounds similar to those in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne starred in this maker of over $89 million worldwide.
MGM may have saved its biggest hit of 1999 for last, though, as Pierce Brosnan took on the James Bond role for the third time in The World is Not Enough, the tale of how Secret Agent 007 attempted to stop a terrorist from assassinating a billionaire and of how he unraveled a scheme that triggered a nuclear meltdown in the Istanbul waters in order to increase the price of petroleum, and also of how he tried to protect the billionaire’s previously-held-for-ransom daughter. The movie saw 007 ring out the 20th century with a bang, making a whopping $361.8 million worldwide. It was also the first of the Bond movies to be released directly by MGM, which converted United Artists to an arthouse division sometime earlier.
Other MGM releases of 1999 included Andy Garcia’s Just the Ticket, which couldn’t even scalp one, Elizabeth Shue as an autistic woman named Molly coming into the grips of her neurotic executive brother, Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman in a film that critics said was far from Flawless, and Miss Julie, UA’s first film after its conversion into an arthouse subsidiary. MGM also found time in 1999 to get a Tom Berenger vehicle out the door: One Man’s Hero, the last film ever released by the original Orion Pictures. And through its G2 subsidiary, MGM released a film starring Cher, Judi Dench, and several others, all gathered for a picture called Tea with Mussolini.
MGM kept the five product lines it introduced (Western Legends, Vintage Classics, Contemporary Classics, Movie Time, MGM Family Entertainment) up and running throughout, and introduced two more to that pile: “World Films” and “Soul Cinema”.
Around 1998, MGM started using a new logo on their DVDs, in which a red oval comes on to the screen containing a red circle with the MGM logo enclosed. Leo roars loudly in it, and then the letters for “MGM DVD” zoom out one by one. The oval and circle disappear in a flash of light and the remaining texts move closer to each other. This logo, quintessentially late ’90s as it seemed, would be used on all MGM DVDs from then until 2003 in the U.S. Also in 1998, MGM and a few other movie studios started releasing films on DVD in Europe; these, under Warner distribution, used just the theatrical MGM logo at the start; the MGM DVD logo began to be used on international DVD titles starting around early 2000, when the company switched international distributors to 20th Century Fox.
The 7000 and 8000 series titles are lumped together here as they were the last to be issued in a sequence matching the UPC code. Later in 2000, MGM did a new numbering system starting at 1000000, which had numbers that no longer corresponded with those seen on the UPC code. And this, I feel, is a good place to end this thing. The last title MGM issued under its old catalog numbering sequence was a DVD of a made-for-television film called Kiss the Sky. The “M” prefix was dropped from MGM tapes around late 1999 or early 2000.
The VHS tapes on this page used a white ink label with the MGM logo to the bottom left, the FBI warning to the bottom right, and relevant information regarding the tape at the top.

8058: Back to School (1986) From Orion Pictures. 2000 DVD. This disc has an awkward widescreen side that isn’t really widescreen; MGM just slapped a pair of black bars at the top and bottom of an evidently 4:3 print of the film, something made most glaringly obvious by the opening credits, where the displayed name of Harold Ramis as screenwriter is cut off by one of the black bars. Thankfully, better widescreen transfers of this film were to come in the HD era.

8085: Absolute Beginners (1986) From Orion Pictures. MGM Musicals.
8086: The Fantasticks (2000) From United Artists. This was meant to be released in 1995, but indifferent preview audiences caused MGM to drop its theatrical run at the last minute; in September 2000, MGM released the film, with 23 minutes removed from its initial runtime, in four theaters, where it did very little business, then went directly to video. MGM has long since lost the high-definition transfer of the original 109-minute cut; a standard-definition print of that cut was released as a special feature on a 2015 Blu-ray of the film that was issued by Twilight Time.
